Calle Armenia runs through Palermo. It must have the biggest concentration of cool bars and restaurants in the world. One after another – dark red interiors, gold walls, silver floors, strange lighting effects, sculptural bits, odd spiky foliage and funky furniture. This is the cool Palermo that everyone speaks of. Alice and I were not impressed. It seemed to be all smoke and mirrors and what would you wear to hang out in these places?
In daylight hours the shops of Palermo are fancy too. Many had bold designs on their outside walls and artfully arranged gear inside. I’ve never seen more boutique clothes shops in one space, tiny boxes selling unique designer dresses, t-shirts and shoes. But who buys all this? And with what? It wasn’t cheap, any of it. I never saw anyone in Buenos Aires wearing cool clothes. Apart from the old ladies, that is.
