It’s decorated beautifully. Apparently Buenos Aires is one of the foremost centres of the noble art of graffiti these days. Though the tube trains are tagged – covered in the initials of graffiti artists – the city walls have a much more imaginative collection of pictures – robots and monsters and funny little cartoons and birds. In Barracas, an area once full of warehouses and now a quiet, dangerous place to wander round, a man who was born there, Marino Santa Maria, has covered his whole street with splashy abstract paintings and meticulous mosaics. His neighbours were all quite happy to let him at it – he told me that there are other large areas of the city he intends to paint also.
