Parilla

I went to a smart parilla (grill) owned by a friend of a friend for an asado (grilled meat extravaganza). Everyone was given a small wooden board and slabs of meat were brought to the table in rounds, each one a different cut of cow. It was mostly delicious but I wasn’t sure at all about the neck gland which is a long twist of fatty meat. Curly intestines I liked.
The friends were concerned that I was heading north. Ay, said one, La Ruta de Dengue. The Path of Dengue. Dengue Fever, carried by mosquitoes, is the current obsession in Argentina – the nightly news recounts the latest deaths and new places it’s arrived in. It’s reached Buenos Aires now! And Mendoza! Etc. But actually it’s a serious epidemic with tens of thousands of sufferers all over southern South America and if you die of it, it’s a horribly painful death with agonising internal bleeding. I was duly presented with a bottle of Off! the foul smelling local insect repellent which seems to be Argentina’s main offensive against the disease.
